most houses either have a front parking or back parking through an alley way. these people have a canal instead of an alleyway for them to "park" their boats. and when they have more than two then one gets parked just outside on the road, rather canal.
the norfolk county being an old established county, have a proliferation of huge mansions, mostly on somewhat elevated lands, where once they can just look over the waters of lake erie. perhaps they thought living near the water or right by the water was not a good idea in terms of flooding (or being invaded by the americans in the case of the war of 1812. damn people!). so living right by the lake was left to the middle income people and that jacked up the prices of the surrounding properties, and then the mansion habitants are not just looking at the lake anymore but at the roofs of the houses as well.
there was a large (about a half acre) vacant property which was for sale that had a sweeping view of the lake, a beautiful view of the sunrise (which we figured out quite belatedly) as well as a gorgeous view of the sunset, and eighty-six feet of sandy beach frontage. partner and i joked that we could purchase the property and just pitch a tent during the summer. hahaha! i looked at the real estate listing and it is on sale for $395K. not spending my retirement money on that! we both agreed we'll just have a drive around here every now and then!
