today's word is "manual". as in manual setting of a camera. i was ready to give up on moon shots against the black sky because all i get at best is a really bright round ball thingamajiggy. one night during the summer, i even set up my tripod in the parking lot right next to my apartment building, mounted the camera on the settings recommended. still got a big fat nada except a bright ball. you see, a failed shot is worse than a rejection letter from a publisher. that i can easily handle. heck, i've got about 15 million of those rejection letters. but a moon shot is an epic fail for me. no, make that WAS and had always been an epic fail. that all changed tonight.
ta-dah, i turned the dial of my camera to set it on auto. holy moon shot! i have a small blurb of another white ball and top of houses. i zoomed in the moon and alleluhiah it has moon details. i tried again, zoomed it in at fifty percent. yay! i can't find the moon so i decided to rest my elbows in something concrete. like a car with a turned off engine. zoomed again on the moon and pressed the shutter. i really thought something possessed my camera. so i looked and it was on manual setting! played around with the numbers on the screen and voilà! i got me moon!
i know, i know. 90% of the members have already done moon shots better than this, but mine is special. because it's my moon and i photographed it. now, i better go and jot down those settings. manual is my new friend.
"the moon is like a lovely tune...beware, my foolish heart"
It is special! Because for most of us, it is the process and not final product that necessarily counts..and getting better at things and making our goals. Yay on your moon! It is gorgeous!
@steeler - howard, that would really be more impressive than anything else! i am tempted to say that if you've done that, i will name all my future children after you. but alas, the old lady can only promise you a bottle of canadian maple syrup. :-) thank you, howard.
Way to go. It is so true that the greatest successes almost always come after many failed attempts. The question is whether or not a person will keep on trying until they succeed. Very Nice shot
@altadc - it looks like a melon, isn't it? i still do envy people who can shoot them well. in august i was following the progression of the moon in @pacole 's album. check it out when you have the time. thank you, alta.
well, i'm impressed. because I agree, moon shots are hard and my little p&s doesn't do them well, or rather I haven't quite worked out how to yet. So, great shot friend.
@danig - mate, sorry, i saw this only today. i should be whipped with a wet noodle! i was so impressed with me, too, until i saw someone's moon shot (i think cissy b - coastandcactus) which was really impressive. hahahaha! if i try anymore harder i'd probably go insane, so got the moon, that's it. thanks, DG.
Ohmygoodness!! This is a beautiful shot of the moon! Not even in my dreams after I took a shot of the moon did the moon look so pretty! Maybe it's because of how far my camera can zoom and how far the moon was away from me the night I attempted to take a picture of the moon, but I could never be able to get a shot like this. It's really beautiful.
@bebobee - thank you, joyce. i use a sort of juiced up point and shoot, 12x zoom and i discovered that for moon shots, i should use the manual setting. i'd like to try it sometime with my manual SLR.
@patticake - thank you, patti. you're always so kind. yes, i'd like to sit down and share stories, soon!
