As a Californian, we had not expected to attend our first Film Festival in Nova Scotia!
We are so enthused to see new and exciting venues coming to Lunenburg! We love documentaries, so 7 of them over the weekend, plus 10 shorts was everything we might have hoped for! (Lunenburg has no commercial movie theater).
Of most personal interest was the opening movie about the tall ship, "Bounty" which we'd toured when it was docked here two years ago. We were shocked & saddened when we heard it had sunk during Hurricane Sandy. This documentary, followed by a Q&A with film makers, Edward Peill & Geoff D'Eon, was somewhat insightful as to what took place, but even they admitted it was peppered with unsolved riddles that may never be answered. Fascinating! The movie was followed by a lovely gala in the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, one of the iconic red buildings on the harbour. What a great kickoff to the weekend!
It's not so easy to get photos in such a setting, but the collage is a memory album for us, and to mark the day.
I'm so glad you posted the links to the previous pictures of the Bounty. What a shame to lose such a magnificent vessel to the hurricane. I imagine the owners and those closely associated with the ship feel like they lost a family member and a treasure.
@lyndemc At the end, I was unclear as who actually "owned" the ship. The flim makers said they had a great deal of trouble getting crew members to talk about the incident because they remained loyal to the captain who was lost to the sea. (A couple of other ship's captains...who knew him...said the decision to set sail was a foolhardy one...) All the answers may never be known. Thanks for your comment!
@Weezilou Thank you for the inspiration to go and read more about this ship's story. Interesting that Ms. Christian claimed to be a descendent of the leader of the mutiny on the original Bounty...
@lyndemc It's always nice, isn't it, to be able to share an interesting (mystery) story! In the film they had a clip where she spoke of the family history she'd been told, but the film's narrator said there was no proof of this story... Such a vibrant young lady with the spunk of the cheerleader she had been...she'd seemed to have been a favorite, and such a sad and tragic loss, no matter the instance.
