Having consulted a number of 'experts' the consensus is that the mushroom I thought may be a Scleroderma citrinum (Common Earthball) isn't, rather it is most likely to be a Chlorophyllum rhacodes (sometimes called the Shaggy Parasol). If you want to see my original posting see
