In the summer the Goldfinches are a bright sunny yellow but come winter their colors are much more muted. Since we got nearly a foot of snow over the weekend the birds have arrived in record numbers. I can't keep the feeders full! Lots of House Finches, Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Jays, Juncos, Starlings & Sparrows but I'm still not seeing the Nuthatches or Chicadees yet. We feed a combination of mostly Black Oil Sunflower seed mixed with some sunflower hearts, cracked corn, a fruit & nut seed mixture, plenty of suet cakes & logs plus thistle in the finch feeders. Sometimes it takes awhile for the word to get out there's food but usually once the sparrows arrive in large numbers the other birds take notice and they start to come around too. Sparrows are a bit of a nuisance but I consider them worth feeding in exchange for the advertising they provide to get the more colorful birds interested. Bad weather always brings the birds in since any food left is now buried in the snow and is too deep to get at.
@lynnmwatson Thank you Lynn for always leaving such nice comments, I really do read & appreciate each and every one! :) I'm so behind on viewing & commenting this past week but I'm determined to catch up soon! :)
I haven't had any goldfinches at my feeder this year. I'm not sure where they are hiding. I think my neighbor may be feeding them something better.
Great shot. I love your bird photos.
@maggie2 Thank you Margaret, I really appreciate all the nice comments you leave for my pictures! :) We haven't had nearly as many Goldfinches this year either but I think mine left because I didn't feed during the summer because we had so much rain that it was too big of a mess. The food was always soggy so it spoiled quickly so I just quit until winter rolled around and by then they gave up on me. They are slowly returning though! They like the sunflower seed but the thistle seems to be what they like the more than anything else!
Great shot. I love your bird photos.
