Hokitika by dkbarnett

Hokitika

A very wet and grey day down on the West Coast - very typical.
What does it mean?

Hokitika is the name of the township. It is a Maori name. I have looked up the origin of the name and it is a bit gruesome. It originates from a battle between two rival Maori tribes. A survivor knew the importance of taking the heads of three of the chiefs back home with him so their mana remained intact. Hokitika therefore means 'the going by the right path' or 'following the correct path to return home'
