A lovely sunny afternoon in the centre of Preston yesterday.
On the right the Harris Museum & Library, the Magistrates Court in the centre with the tower & on the left is the old Post Office & Cenataph. This used to be such a busy Post office but now it has been moved down a tiny street the complete other end of town. How any one would find it I have no idea.
On high days & holidays this square is used for any celebration & usually a fairground.
Of course this year there will be much celebrating as it its the year of Preston Guild which is held every 20 years, the last being 1992.
The Preston Guild has been in existence since Henry 2nd granted the right of traders to form a guild & anyone wishing to trade in the town had to become a member.
It is the only Guild left in the whole of the UK.
There is a saying if something happens very rarely . 'once every Preston Guild'
Oooooh!! You know how to light my fire Pat!!! I love this square! What week is Preston Guild? I've got some weeks to fill in the summer hols - I might try and come up. TBH I can't believe it isn't getting as much publicity as the Olympics and Jubilee :0). Dad brought some records up when they visited and one was the Guild song of 1972 - collectors item!
@judithg Have just checked the dates for the Preston Guild & although it is going on with various events all year the main celebrations start on the 31st August & all the following week. The main day that you & I probably remember best is the Trade Procession which starts at 11am on Saturday 1st September.
If you do find the time let me know & we could meet up !!
@happypat Ooh right thanks - I'll stick that in my diary and hope it doesn't get obliterated by other stuff. I think Adam will be on a school trip so that's one down! I do remember the parade - and the sitting on the pavement for ages waiting for it to start and then people sticking kids in front at the last minute amidst lots of tutting and complaint!! Not sure I can remember the floats though! I wasn't there for the last one but my friend Katie Plumb (of stretch covers) said it was very good and her sister did a lot of organising.
Lovely street scene! Looks like a wonderful day! When I worded at a kids clothing store a few years ago, we had a regular customer that came from Preston. She mustn't have been here very long, her accent was very thick. I had her accent down pat, although I never let her hear my imitation :)
@shutterbugger He he !!! Some people in Lancashire have a very strong accent, I don't think I have one but people can tell I come from Lancashire so must have a trace !!
