I think I have completely mislead everyone as I am pretty sure now that these flowers are not lilacs but Buddleja! I was at the garden center today, saw one of these & thought ..oops !!

I think you are correct. Over here in *the colonies* Buddleja is commonly know as *Butterfly* bush. The timing of the blooming also supports this.
