International 'Women's' Day - the Women's Land Army
I think it's fair to say that women's role in WW2 changed their perception of themselves for ever. My collage shows my auntie (left) on a farm (she also worked building roads on airbases) and my mother (bottom right) in an apple orchard.
In my childhood innocence/ignorance I thought for ages that those little dresses in the top right pic (I've marked my mum XX) were what they wore to work in the fields. They were actually giving a little concert.
The idea of working on a farm sounds idyllic but it was often hard, boring, backbreaking work.
My next door neighbour, who is almost 90, was in the Women's Land Army here in Australia. Only last year, their service was officially recognised by the Government. They were presented with a medal in the form of a brooch by the Prime Minister.
The women's service here was also recognised - a few years ago now I think it was - long after the event anyway. My auntie was upset after the war because servicemen were isssued with civvies but the WLA members were not.
I think we never would have won the war without them. and there support.
A great collage of those wonderful women.
And yes , still to day farming is hard work. They have machinery but no field workers any more. It`s all up to the farmer himself and... his WIFE.
Great collage, my mother was in the land army during WW2, she also worked as a nurse meeting the injured as they were bought home, she doesn't talk about it much but when we can get her to talk it is so interesting,

Darren, thanks for your kind words. It's made me unexpectedly feel a bit emotional doing this. ('Daft ha-porth' as they say in my native Suffolk!)
