This Tithe Barn on the estate of Titchfield Abbey is just huge - 48m long - hence my collage, impossible given its location to capture the whole length in one shot.
Because it is disproportionately large compared with the Abbey, and there is doubt about its date of erection, some experts believe it should be called a Great or Manorial Barn, not a Tithe Barn.
The theory has been put forward that the Barn was built in the early rather than the late 15th century and that its original purpose was to store and shelter provisions before Henry V's battle with the French at Agincourt. The men and animals would have slept in the open in the surrounding fields. Nearby Titchfield Haven was an important port in the 15th century.
Thus, the scene is set for a sort of mediaeval D-Day landings!
The Barn is now used to stage plays by Will Shakespeare.
Yes, I think they are for light. It was closed when we visited but hope to go back and see inside.
