Two days ago I posted a Spicebush Swallowtail. Today I got the ventral view. As noted two days ago, there is a nice blogspot page at Louisiana Naturalist that shows how to identify four of the dark swallowtail butterflies. (Sorry it’s not a secure, https link.) Following that page, this is again a Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus): “Often you can see some of the dorsal side when Spicebush Swallowtails' wings are closed, and when that happens, you can still see those bluish-white fingertips. With only the ventral side of the hindwing showing, you can see that Spicebush Swallowtails have two rows of orange spots, minus one. That absent orange spot is diagnostic.” Despite the uneven lighting above, the absent orange spot is apparent, so another Spicebush Swallowtail.
