or, more particularly, a draw bridge.
went on a photo trek with
@k1w1 and
@northy in Hamilton, Ontario, west of Toronto. we started out with scattered rains and heavy grey clouds. but we were gifted by mother nature with a clearing sky for the planned night shots of the city. we took advantage of gaining a one-hour sleep due to the change in time so we stayed out later than old ladies should have. well, just myself, the other two are still spring chickens.
in any case, we wanted to go underneath the Burlington skyway. i've been wanting to go there myself so it was the most opportune time and by golly, that's where our penultimate destination was. i think being there was best summed up by
@northy's remark: "this is heaven!'
i'm pretty sure you've all seen
@northy's shot of the westbound view of the skyway

@k1w1's shot of the eastbound view
http://365project.org/k1w1/365/2013-11-02 this is the view of the drawbridge that faces Lake Ontario (the big bridge in the upper portion is the skyway or the skybridge.
the drawbridge, officially known as the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, is a structure that "is a tower driven, vertical lift and moveable bridge. The lift span is 116 metres long, weighs 1,996 tonnes and has a vertical lift of 33.5 metres; at full lift height, maximum clearance for marine traffic is approximately 36.5 metres during typical water level conditions; when locked in its lowered position, a clearance of approximately 5 metres, during typical water level conditions, allows very small pleasure craft, kayaks and canoes to pass easily beneath the bridge." - lifted from the pages of Public Works and Government Services Canada.
