One of the beauties of Black and White Photography is its ability to pick up patterns, lines, texture and shape so distinctly. Two photographers who have expressed this beauty in their black and white photography using nature as their inspiration are Karl Blossfeldt and Tom Baril.
For a more general introduction to the nuances of capturing nature watch this video which includes the details on how the photographer captured each image:
You have two ways to approach your picture taking this month. Some photographers prefer to shoot in color and convert to black and white in post-processing. The other option is to set your camera to monochrome/black and white from the start. If you’re new to black and white, I’d suggest the latter. Being able to review the picture in black and white on your camera’s LED screen will be an additional tool in helping you to see how black and white “works”.
This week you will be exploring black and white’s amazing ability to capture the subtle nuances of light as it brings out the shape, contour, or design of your subject. You can shoot macro, close-up or as wide and broad as a natural landscape (We’ll save cityscapes for next week). You can find subjects at a local park, a nature preserve, your own backyard or even in a bouquet on your dining room table. The possibilities are limitless. Don’t worry about replicating the examples you’ve seen here exactly. Not all of us have the ability to wander through the woods or set up a studio to perfectly light up our subject. This week train your eyes to see the subject more than the setting. You might see those lines and patterns on a stalk of celery or next to your front walk.
@365anne valentines day is the day for some selective color, but you can choose where to put it in your month, or leave it out completely, up to you, Ann will have some how to instructions for us when needed if you have never done it before
I'm getting all excited - last year was the first time I'd really ever tried bw and the first time I did a theme for an entire month so it was amazing how much I learned!
@koalagardens I always love to see how the month has helped people to grow as photographers. Glad to know it had such a good impact on you Katrina! (o:
