I apologise for the quality of this photo of a photo, but given my current time restraints, I took the easy way out. This is the wedding of my great aunt Cissie and her husband Johnnie Copland (or Cooplan as the Shetlanders would pronounce it). My mum (on the right of photo) was bridesmaid along with her cousin Betty Hughson. Mum looks so sweet and innocent here. Not sure how old she would have been, but I'd guess around 16. After my mum and dad got married, they had a holiday in Shetland as dad had never been there. One of the things they did was to go out on a boat with the groom in this photo, Johnnie. They very nearly never got back, as the weather turned foul and the boat started playing up. As dad discovered afterwards, Johnnie was renowned for being one of the worst boatmen on the island! We always laugh at that story. Flash of Red February - Week Three - Portraits.
What a wonderful photo and an interesting story. I am putting all my collection of old photos in a photobook at the moment and am really enjoying putting it together.
What a great story to go with this fab photo. My brother in law is half Maori and one of his ancestors told how her husband rowed her out into a lake in a canoe and refused to row her back until she said agreed to marry him. They were out there for hours!
