turquoise

i enjoyed my visit at toronto's royal ontario museum yesterday. there was a special exhibit of precious and semi-precious gemstones in the museum of mineralogy.

this is a turquoise and diamond necklet on display. turquoise is a prized gemstone the intense blue colour of which is mottled by brown or black minerals. the name comes from the french "turquoise" which means "turkish" because the gemstone came to europe through turkey originating from iran. this necklet is made of the highest quality persian turquoise, a name denoting the colour rather than the source.

shot through glass case where lighting source are placed strategically so that one cannot take a proper shot, but my point and shoot still did a good job notwithstanding.

thank you for your kind views and comments; know that they are sincerely and truly appreciated.
how pretty,

What a gorgeous necklace! Love turquoise and silver jewelry ... this looks very expensive. I'm amazed that you can take photos there. I went to our museum here and no photos were allowed ...anywhere. Which is ridiculous, I think. They had a King Tut exhibition here recently, but all the items shown were fakes. And still ... no cameras.

@karenann - thank you, KA. it was quite an experience to walk into a room full of expensive jewelry. they are all in thick glass cages. i was amazed that they allowed photography at all exhibitions, especially the gemstone sections. some of the raw rocks you can even touch. there was an 'egyptian' section and they had the remains of one of the mummies that were displayed when they had the king tut exhibits here. some people were taking photos. i don't know the value of taking a mummified person's photo. i didn't, not because i didn't want to but out of respect for the dead. for heaven's sakes, it was already taken out of its resting place and put on display. the most respect i can pay to it is not take its photo.

@olivetreeann - thank you, ann. that canon i think did its last task. this was heavily cropped from the original. today i tried to use my canon and everything is a blur. it does still take good macros though.
