896.39 carats

try wearing that on your finger. if you haven't arthritis yet or carpal tunnel, you'll surely develop either or both in just half a day. in all parts of your body.

this is a cerussite, one of royal ontario museum's iconic objects. it is a lead carbonate mineral and at 896 carats this is the largest cut gem of this mineral in the world. its dispersion or fire is more intense than a diamond's. dispersion is seen as the rainbow of colours visible as one moves around the stone. this stone is from tsumeb, namibia.

again, shot through a much thicker glass casing, this is displayed far away from the other jewels in the exhibit. at first i even thought that the casing cannot be touched but i pressed my cameras' lenses against the glass to take pictures and no alarms went off. i bet they turn it on in the evening where they have this network of invisible laser beams. ahh, steve mcqueen comes to mind, with his lithe body moving stealthily around those laser beams, his face well masked but you could still discern those soulful eyes as he stared at you, and then you feel hot and sweaty...and wait a minute, where were we? :-) aherm!

i went back three times to take photos of this gemstone. twice using the nikon, and once using the canon. after i have seen the entire five floors of exhibits, i wanted to go back and shoot it again, but security might think i was casing the joint, so i just bought me a membership so i can go back there anytime i want to. whew! this hobby is getting more expensive by the day.

but the good thing is going to exhibitions like this and other places, broadens our knowledge, at least i know i do, about things we normally wouldn't care about. like who cares about some shiny big stone, except of course when steve mcqueen is part of the deal. too bad he's been dead for quite a while now. ah, steve....

whopsa! thank you, folks, for your wonderful visits and comments; i truly appreciate them, always.
This is gorgeous and yes so was Steve. I'm thinking Lara Croft had a great laser scene too but I could've mistaken it for a different Angelina Jolie movie now

Sue
the sparkly stone is nice, but your story had me laughing....I got thinking about that commercial where the girl comes in from the ceiling on a wire and the dogs don't look up and see her and she makes away with something or other....I think it was an anti-persperant commercial...not very effective because i don't remember the brand or the product but i do remember that she was a thief on a wire...lol

My movie heart throb was from a different era- and did more singing and dancing than drama. But yes, I can see where some might be drawn to Steve McQueen instead. Nice shot!

@olivetreeann - ahhh, he with the smiling eyes! he's in that 40 carats movie i bought two weeks ago. but you know he went out of his usual element in that one war movie - "a bridge too far" maybe? - and i loved him there.

@summerfield I know he did do one drama- but I don't remember what it was called. My two favorites are of course, Singing in the Rain and An American in Paris. But I also like Summer Stock and On the Town. I had so many of them in VHS and now I can't watch them anymore because the VCR broke and we never replaced it. So I've started to watch for ways to replace them- little by little.
