i have a lot of pearl necklaces, mostly i bought them during store sales and at antique markets.
in my first job back in the old country, there was a woman who would come to the office every week to sell clothes, costume jewelry and real jewelry on instalment. she refused and vehemently discouraged me to buy pearl jewelry. it was a belief, superstitious of course, that pearl represents 'tears' for a young or single woman, and that it invites heartbreak in relationships. even as a young girl i've heard my mother talk about that superstition, even though she left me a real pearl pendant before she died. (see that story here: http://365project.org/summerfield/365/2012-10-01
but i love pearls. fake or real, expensive or cheap, pearls spell elegance when worn. why, i even wear a pearl choker with my jogging outfit or when i go to the supermarket.
Nicely presented. I've heard of this superstition so consequently didn't get any pearls until my 24th wedding anniversary. Like you I think they are very elegant although don't wear them whilst jogging;0)
@sarasdadandmom - and i hope the future/younger generation would recognize not just its monetary value but its historic and instrinsic values as well. thank you, terry.
