"'A third major difference between photography and the other visual arts is timing." so says freeman paterson in 'photography and the art of seeing'. he further says that a painter or sculptor may doodle or postpone but a photographer's pace is "geared to his subject matter and very often is completely determined by it."
on our way to london to switch cars with the stepson for their camping trip, partner had to make one last delivery. it was stifling hot and humid and the traffic was horrendous. after the delivery we stopped so partner could get a decent lunch before continuing on our way. we were near the international airport and i saw that the landing planes' path was almost directly above us. three landing planes passed and photographed, albeit a little bit soft (remember that those suckers fly about 500 mph a minute!). before the fourth plane came, i had already determined that there was at least a gap of two minutes between each landing planes.
those clouds were ominous and the sun behind me was hot and bright so i umped the polarizer. visibility was hampered by the top of the three-storey building but by this time i knew already the sound of an approaching plane. i heard this one before i saw it and i pointed the lens so that when the plane passed it would be just above the clouds. but of course i had to focus quickly on the plane, then bam! perfect timing. well, almost, not quite.
i told partner that if i was working around that area, i'd be spending my break and lunch hour lying on the grass at the nearby park and just shoot all the planes passing by to land.
next, i'd like to capture planes taxiing off.
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are treasured and much appreciated.
You might as well look up as around you in stifling hot traffic! So you aren't going camping too? This is quite a smallish plane and I love the fluffy clouds in focus too!
@maggiemae - no, not camping material, that's me. i want my instant running water and the idea of sharing toilet with too many people does not appeal to me. i can go for a day-long picnic but at the end of the day i want me shower and me bed! :-) thank you, maggiemae.
@olivetreeann - me, too! but actually it was very hot! hahaha! thank you, ann.
Well that's determination for you! Good on you to get the shot you were after! I like the idea of getting pics as they taxiing or about to take off. As the wheels leave the ground I think would make a splendid capture!
@olivetreeann - me, too! but actually it was very hot! hahaha! thank you, ann.
