i call my hands my bread and butter because working as a secretary and/or assistant, i am required to be able to type, among other things. but most of the people i worked for would tell you my bread and butter is my brain because i am capable of being able to think how my bosses would.

i learned how to type in high school not on an actual typewriter but on a piece of paper with a drawing of the keyboard and outline of a pair of hands and the letters were etched on the fingers. by the time i got to secretarial school and touched a real typewriter, i was typing 65 words per minute. in my days, the typewriters were manual and not electric. by the time i graduated from secretarial school i was already typing almost 80 give or take a couple of errors. these days, i type about 120 plus or minus a couple of typographical mistakes. aside from typing,i can also take steno but i prefer to type than take notes.

for the five plus two's "tools of the trade" theme this week.
That's a really interesting keyboard- and a really impressive wpm stat! Nice shot!

@olivetreeann - it's an ergonomic keyboard, ann. the office has to get me one as i suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. one has to get used to it, hard for me now to use the normal keyboard. thank you, ann.

Interesting about the angled keyboard being better to handle. I can type fairly fast too and it helps here if you want to say more than a few words. I'm faster when listening to someone dictating.

I enjoyed reading this, and brought good memories....I learned to type in my mother's manual typewriter, and I loved practicing. In those days there were no Nintendo or anything like it; that was my best past time. I remember when I got my first electricity one, it was a great deal. I type very fast and without looking at the keyboard. I feel when I make a mistake. I must admit I love to type.

school typing lessons on a manual typewriter stood me in good stead also,

Interesting looking keyboard. I did wonder whether it would help with regards carpel tunnel syndrome, and there you have already answered my query. I cannot even hazzard a guess how many words I could type in a minute, but I'm sure it won't be more than about 20! I wouldn't make a very good typist that's for sure!

OK...*I'm Impressed*! I never had a lesson, but I'm "fast" and thank heaven for spell check! Ken took a video of me as I typed last summer, and I confess, my "style" is pretty weird... Good for you that you have the proper tools for business...

This is a very interesting composition! Great to see those hands in action! I never took typing in high school and always regretted it. Of course now with talk to text all I have to do is be able to edit! Sometimes I don't even manage that very well!

Gee I never knew there is such a thing as a ergonomic keyboard. you live and learn. I bought a keyboard while in Mexico and it totally confused me. all the symbols came out different than what was shown on the board. your typing speed per minute is impressive.

I particularly loved formatting tables (wierd, I know)... Your comment on psyching out the bosses is very apt, though.

A fav for your composition. I have the same keyboard, but it must be defective. At my best (which was a while back) I could only do around 45 wpm. :D

@annied - thank you, miss annie.

@maggiemae - i much prefer to type when the boss is dictating as i hate putting on earphones and listen to dicta. the ergo keyboard takes a while to get used to. thank you, maggiemae.

@anazad511 - i think i can type blindfolded as long as no one screws up with the keys! hahaha! thank you, ana

@kali66 - good for us, eh! thank you, kali

Great composition. I always loved typing in High School and I loved shorthand. It went by the wayside over the years, but I still use it to take notes now that I'm retired. Typing was also one of my strong talents.

Oooh you have one of those quirky qwerty keyboards, I'm also a PA/secretary and just love audio typing but don't get chance to do it often anymore, find myself drafting my own letters and reports for approval nowadays :-(
Love the shot of busy hands

@salza - that's why you need to hire me! :-) thank you, sally.

@Weezilou - well, as long as you can spell and construct a sentence correctly, if you type the standard minimum, you're good! i'd hire you just for the smile! :-) thank you, louise.

@barneyone - these hands started housework at barely 4. i used to have really old woman's hands with lots of veins. turned out it was because i had no fat in my body that's why. now i have fat all over me! thank you, rita.

@grammyn - hehehehe! thank you, katy. i love reading your talk to text, they're entertaining.

@bruni - thank you, bruni. i know of two other people who type faster than i do - my brother in the states and my sister here in toronto. they both work for accounting firms and they type numbers. they're also weird. :-)

@francoise - one of the tasks of a good assistant or secretary is to be able to think like the boss. now i don't want to do that anymore. i just want to have long breaks and take photos! :-) thank you, francoise.

@bill_fe - 45 wpm is quite good. for a beginner. using those heavy underwood or olivetti typewriters. :-) thank you, bill.

@henrir - thank you, henri. i still remember my steno but i don't let people know that anymore. sometimes when i'm talking to someone on the phone and i'm holding a pen and paper, you can bet i'd have recorded much of the conversation in shorhand. :-)

@sharrystar - most of my work is drafting correspondence and reports. i don't do dicta either and if my boss has a short dictation, i type it directly while he looks at the screen. most times he would just tell me to write whatever it is he needs do and i compose the letter or the document. thank you, sharon.
