When we went to Berlin a few years ago, we were struck by the number of memorials around the city (hardly surprising really) to the terrible things that happened both in the world wars and also during the time it was part of East Germany.
So was very excited that she forms part of the exhibition at the Royal Academy Making Modernism, focusing on several pioneering German expressionists, all women. Kollwitz stands out with her precise style and always gripping subject matter - intimate portraits of mothers and children, lovers - and death and suffering. She was famous for her portrayals of the hard lives of the working classes.
Worked in the office, first day back since before Christmas. Home after the exhibition to pizza and Weathering With You, a beautifully created Japanese animation - boy meets girl during strange weather apocalypse. Good but I did doze off half way through.
Mum seems to have another cold.
3 good things
1. Ivan was in the office, no longer an intern, having got Peter's old job just before Christmas.
2. First lunch of the year at Papa Bruno's - cheese omelette.
3. Getting to an exhibition I want to see - too often I miss them.
Have seen the mother & son sculpture. In what was the old Eastern side of the city. We lived in Berlin for four years, still one of my favourite cities.
