walk on by

i didn't go to work today because we heard that my brother in chicago was hospital-bound. after seven years of being on the waiting list for a kidney transplant they thought they had found a match for him. i stayed home because i was late going to bed last night talking to my sister-in-law, and had to wait for word and i didn't want to be in the office waiting for the news. sadly though, the test results were not good, so there was no operation after all. they start to wait again.

after i heard the final news, i was both disappointed and relived at the same time. since it was a beautiful day, i intended to take on a short city and boat tour but didn't make it downtown until about three, only to find out the tour i wanted to take was no more. it was called the 'hippo tour' on an amphibious bus that went around the city then on to the lake for the tour of the islands. apparently it didn't generate good business here so it was relocated out west.

so i sat around watching people go by. i've never really sat down on a bench along a busy road watching people. but there's always a first time for anything. i did my 30-second game this morning at home and wasn't happy with my shots so sitting there and watching people, i thought i'd do the 30-second game instead.

i got quite a lot of photos of people smoking, rushing through other people, people who stopped to take out their cellphones and take photos of something as they look up, people talking on their cell, a photographer taking photos of a couple and i guessed it was probably an engagement photo shoot.

this girl was in 8 frames that i took. this was the 8th frame. i like this one because she reminded me of myself when i was young: walking purposely, looking straight ahead, body straight, wide strides, serious face. for a young girl, she's dressed sensibly, in fact my dresses are similar to this style and it's the style i've been wearing since i was young. i don't go for what's in, i wear clothes that have timeless lines. i could wear that dress right now and still feel comfortable, not look like i'm trying hard to look young and hip, but decent and respectable. (hush, people, hush!).
I love the b&w treatment for the background, it really adds strength to your focus point of the girl! This came out incredibly well!!! I may have to try my hand at the 30 second challenge, it sounds like fun!

Sorry to hear about your brother. Sending you and your family my prayers.

I am so very sorry.
Glad that you soothed yourself with your camera. I do that often now. Good therapy.
And I like your shot.

cmon now....you opened yourself up for it in that last sentence.....how can we NOT respond about this alleged "decent and respectable" label..?!...lol - - i like that you went out and took shots even though you were not having the best day ever (understatement). Sorry about your brother.......hopefully next time.

Transplant donors make such a difference. Thanks for the reminder that organ donation is an option. Best wishes to your brother. I like this girl and I don't even know her. The use of color so selectively is very effective

Sorry about your brother. This is a great street photo. I love your selective coloring. I have to learn how to do that. It really makes the girl pop in this photo and sets the mood.

Sorry about the news, glad that in spite of the situation you are facing you are still encourage to get some shot for the day. This is a very elegant shot I should say even it's a street shot. Wonderfully done, have a great weekend summerfield!

This is so beautiful. :)

Sorry to hear about you brother, summerfield. Pray the next call will be good news and all will go well. Great capture of the girl and the "fashion statement" that goes with it! I love her classic style myself and her no-nonsense way of walking. I only wear slacks (khakis and tee shirts these days.) Fashion today is only designed for thirteen year olds! Hard to find "classic" anymore. I'm a black, white and navy person. If I pick up something "red" my husband reminds me quickly enough ..."You KNOW that you won't wear that!" And he's right. It hangs in the closet until I donate it. lol

Great street and motion capture. Sorry that your brother still has to wait.

@socalgal - thank you, patty. the 30-second game is quite fun, i find it more fun in the street rather than at home. the original challenge was to walk into a room in your home or find an object and shoot for 30 seconds; the idea is to think quickly but freely.

@cdonohoue - thank you, cathy. thank heavens for a positive and useful hobby.

@sticksandstones - thank you, kiddo. i said "hush!" :-)

@pandorasecho - thank you, dixie. i thought of you when i looked at this photo on my laptop. i remembered your photo as a young woman; there is a similarity.

@henrir - thank you, henri. it's quite easy. when i see a photo of yours that i think would need a selective colouring, i'll let you know.

@cottoncandy - thank you, mischell. sometimes, we have to force our minds to create in order to release the tension.

@kyren167 - thank you, karen.

@daveanajao - thank you, dave.

@karenann - thank you, KA. i'm so taken by that dress. maybe i'll search online for it.

@pamfromcalgary - thank you, pam. he's still at the top of the list, it's just a matter of finding that perfect donor.

@socalgal @cdonohoue @sticksandstones @pandorasecho @henrir @cottoncandy @kyren167 @daveanajao @karenann @pamfromcalgary

thank you so much, folks, for your kind wishes, prayers and concern. i appreciate them a lot. he's still in front of the list and it is just a matter of finding that perfect donor. it has been seven years and my brother was both joyful and scared at the news, then disappointed and relieved at the results. things happen for a reason and i know we are not given a burden to punish but to make us stop, reflect and appreciate whatever good exists in our lives. again, my heartfelt thanks.

@summerfield I would appreciate your suggestions on the selective coloring. I don't even know how to do it, but would love to learn.

We have a good friend at church who is also waiting for a kidney. Hoping your brother will have good news soon. Great shot too. I like the selective coloring and the capture mid-stride.
