january moon shot

first moon shot of the year, as finally, we in toronto can see stars and the moon. my only beef with this shot is the star that should have been in the upper left could not be captured by my p&s. now the funny thing is, my nikon dSLR could never get a decent shot of the moon, no matter what i do. however, it did capture the moon - just its shape but no details just all bright light - and the star beside it. but it was still trash so i'd go with my canon's pretty moon shot.

inspired by TK's moon shot yesterday. that's it, i'm getting meself a canon. have a look-see at this please: http://365project.org/tksharpley/365/2013-01-23

Truly fabulous

Beautiful! Amazing how the moon differs between the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere. I've also added a picture of last nights moon ( http://365project.org/salza/extras/2013-01-21)

Beautiful lunar capture. Just beautiful :-)

Canon's do a decent job with the moon shots. I'm happy, too. It's hard to justify paying hundreds or thousands to get one lens to do the same thing. I guess I'll stay with the Canon Coolpix then. ;-)

Great moon shot. Did you try to shoot in manual mode with your Nikon DSLR? The moon is very bright at night so you need a fast shutter speed.
January 22nd, 2013
@helstor - yes, lowest ISO and fast shutter speed. no luck. would have to play with it when the weather isn't as horrible as last night's. thank you, erik.

nice shot.

Great detail! The best tip I had for moon shots was to expose for daylight on a manual setting, so usually I'd pick something like f7.1 or thereabouts and 1/160 or a bit faster. I guess if you expose for the moon that way it won't be enough time for the star to show in the same shot.

@mitchell50 - thank you, mitch. much appreciated.

@olivetreeann - thank you, ann. are you sure your camera can't take a moon shot?

@monaalta - what's stopping you? i thought you had a dSLR? thank you, alta.

@sticksandstones - thank you, kiddo!

@claireuk - thank you, claire.

@salza - thank you, sally. isn't it amazing? yours is the complete reverse figure of ours!

@kazzamazoo - thank you, kat.

@dmortega - thank you, dorrena. i'm so close to getting a canon rebel. i should've gotten a canon in the first place. i love my powershot as it can do a lot of things, if i hadn't dropped it. :-)

@fullcircle - thank you, cindy.

@bmnorthernlight - you know, my first moon shot, i only accidentally discovered that manual mode is the best. was just fiddling with the p&s one night and from then on, for moon shots, my p&s is my go to. i will try your setting and play with erik's suggestion too. one thing i'm sure, you got to have the lowest ISO for it. thank you, bm.

wow -- fabulous!!!

@cscecil - thank you, CS.

@summerfield I have tried and tried- but it gets way too grainy when I zoom in on it. And it doesn't pick up the details. It's really a low end of the spectrum p&s. But it can handle some other types of shots quite well- such as the macro shots of mushrooms. So I stick to them and dream about the rest! haha

Oh I missed this one - great moon shot! I can't believe that you got this with your p&s! You are quite handy with that.

wow - amazing shot!

I tried very hard to get the star beside the moon....epic fail....reason:
You have to focus either on the moon or the star (which I didn't know at the time)....Do the moon first, then the star...or star, then moon. Then I was told that you put the photos together in an overlay. (I think this requires Lightroom) Thanks for the compliments! I still do not have an editing program other than Picasa, which is free. And my camera is considered an entry level DSLR.

@tara11 - yes, my canon powershot is my trusty moon-shooter! thank you, tara.

@eniaral - thank you, laraine.

@tksharpley - thank you, TK. i haven't tried picasa or lightroom. but ribbet.com also has a layering function. i got a canon T3i last friday, and i will be picking it up tomorrow. so a new learning curve again. i really wanted a canon but my niece who is a nikon girl convinced me to get a nikon last year. i'm not really married to a specific brand of camera, i just read the write-ups and that's how i swing. :-)
