every now and then i get stupid chain e-mails. like those that warn you not to eat margarine because "it is one molecule away from being plastic and would you melt your tupperware to spread on your bread" kind of thing. i lost quite a few friends because of that margarine thing. i suppose if someone calls me stupid and idiotic, i won't want to be friends with them either. :-)
and then there's Coca-Cola! pour the soft drink on a piece of pork and worms will start coming out of it because they can't withstand the corrosive chemicals in it. or pour the soft drink in your toilet bowl to clean it because it has phosphoric acid and other acids that are found in household cleaners. or if you leave a tooth in a can of coke it will dissolve overnight. or get this, the soft drink is an effective spermicide!
proliferation of incredibly stupid tales can be attributed to people's ignorance. sure, we do not have to be geniuses in chemistry or engineering to understand how anything works, but most of us are given the gift of common sense. if we are in doubt of anything at all, the best thing to do is to research it. what the friend of my best friend's husband's friend's father is not to be relied upon. whenever i hear ridiculous claims like this, i ask where it originated from, who are involved in it, how did they come up to this conclusion, who's telling me this story, and how reliable are they. and then i go to snopes.com.
when someone sends me a ridiculous e-mail, i look for correct spelling, correct usage, correct tenses, correct punctuation. if someone wants to spread around a rumour, at least get a good editor and perhaps it will merit a read from me.
now, do you know that elvis presley is still actually alive and is living in florida? i wonder what he thinks of priscilla's face now.

Tales like this do abound. One of them however, does have a spark of truth. If you leave a tooth in coke the enamel coating of the tooth will be eaten away. It's the reason why it can be detrimental to tooth health. I used the regularly with classes I taught when we were studying science as I tried to encourage them to brush their teeth regularly. I think parents here should be made to do the experiment as the amount of toothed ay of children starting school is appalling.

Nice shot. I read that margarine thing too once. Weird. Although I find this very entertaining. People tend to be afraid very quickly, and spread this horrible news as an absolute truth. But most of the time, I'm hesitant to comment because they usually reply that 'it's not because you're a scientist that you know everything'.
