this was new year's eve 1979, welcoming the year 1980. manila style.
it's one of the things i really miss and would like to experience again. the din of firecrackers everywhere, the evening a kaleidoscope of colours from fireworks above and sparklers on ground, loud stereos, women beating pots and pans around the household to drive away bad spirits, children tooting colourful horns, and, as it is the end of the Christmas season, carolers singing from house to house, all leading to the countdown when the new year arrived. the night's celebration was always capped with a festive meal that friends and families shared.
one day, i shall go back and take it all again one last time.
for five plus two's nostalgia theme this week.
i always said i never wore jeans, and i don't remember having this pair but hey, i was wearing one, flaired at the legs, no less. what is not discernible are my shoulder pads - i was crazy for those!!
and believe it or not, this was a selfie; taken with my minolta slr employing the self-timer function.
I love all your smiles. There are some things from my youth I also wish I could go back and experience again. But I might hesitate if faced with the opportunity. How would the best times in my memory from childhood or adolescence translate to a 21'st century consciousness.
@summerfield haha first of all, AMEN sistah! But secondly, I've seen pictures of you, all fit and looking good all the time, so you can stop right there!
@kerosene - kid, you never heard of photoshop? then there's the "insta-thin" in ribbet, as well as "airbrush" and "wrinkle remover". you're so kind, thanks again. :-D
@summerfield Darn it! I can't even be nostalgic about a flat stomach and the size 6 clothes!!! Because it never happened :)! I like the sense of happiness in it - careless happiness that nothing can beat!
you caught a mood is words and picture. The nostalgia I feel looking is not the excitement of the moment, but the ability to squat down carelessly without worry about how one gets back up again...
Even if I didn't recognize your face (which of course, I do), I would recognize the squat. I see now you did that pretty much all your life, not just when taking pictures.
Nice memories! I bet the firecrackers everywhere will see its end in the coming years since Duterte won the election. Davao banned firecrackers a long time ago.
You can get the fireworks, kids with horns, firecrackers and sparklers on New Year's Eve here in droves! Fun memories for you and you looked good in jeans!
