Pig trough

The romantically-named Pig Trough – the path cutting down along the river to the festival site.
Headed out this morning on a train from Euston to Shrewsbury via Birmingham for the bank holiday weekend Shrewsbury folk festival. Weather forecast wasn’t looking terribly good, so our suitcases looked more like we were heading for outer Mongolia for 6 months – as we’d both ummed and aahed about exactly what and how many waterproof items to bring. And we weren’t even camping. Had fun on the trains trying to find space in the minimal storage compartments for our instruments and ginormous suitcases.

Arrived mid-afternoon and checked into the Prince Regent Hotel where we’d stayed last year. A quick turnaround and then we walked the pleasant riverside way to the festival site. Had a first session with Dave in the mobbed beginners’ session before meeting up with Anna for dinner in the rather damp drizzly evening (a Heidi pie from the wonderfully named Pie Minister).

I headed off to catch Session A9 in the main concert tent – riproaring tunes from a Scottish band (lots of fiddles and a great piano player – before spending the rest of the evening in the Berwick Pavilion bar in an English tunes session which went on well into the early hours – Anna joining me and Dave a bit later.
