I just noticed. I like it. no more squinting for me.. and you can click the star to add as a favorite and click the bubble to leave a comment. If you just want to fav. all you do is click the star..!! YEAH. Thanks Ross!
I thought something was wrong with my browser at first! The day entries have changed as well, images are a lot bigger. I like it, sometimes you can scroll past images quickly and not appreciate how good they are. And a lot of people always say press the magnifying glass to fully appreciate a picture anyway. @steampowered
@soren@Scrivna .... Yes I think my problem is my iPad is one of the very first generation and it seems to get flustered!, my iPhone and PC are fine! Lol
I am more than pleased with this change. It was kind of ridiculous how small the thumbnails were. So glad to see the pages real estate being utilized to its full potential.
I think it looks wonderful. Well done, Ross. BTW, I discovered that the share button doesn't work on MSN Explorer, but works fine on Google Chrome. That should be considered a problem with the rather outdated MSN Explorer browser, not a problem with this site.
@steampowered Thank you fofr telling me I wouldn't have noticed thought Honestly don't know if I should like it . The photos are great the new size but find it hard to have the overview, but happens me with new designs all the time. See how I get along with it
@Scrivna I have had one issue several times now Ross. When I want to make a comment on someone's picture, I start typing in a comment, the page seems to refresh, goes to the top and loses my comment (latest version of Google Chrome). Any ideas?
@steampowered Thanks Paul! Got it. Ha ha I just commented to someone that I would have to come back and fav as my ipad view mode had gone all weird! I really thought it was just me for a mo!
@Scrivna - I think I have found the answer. When typing, if I use the arrow keys to move the cursor left or right then it scoots to a previous or next picture.
@scrivna glad its not 1st April - I thought my ipad was playing tricks on me and it was only 'my' 365 that had gone wonky.
Very cool new format. Thanks
I think we should all be prepared for our daily views to go down though. Less need to click on the photo now that we can see it so large on the home page.
I will admit, it made me very slap happy with my favs! Now, I want to post something, but will be checking focus much more carefully -- the old way was so forgiving :)
love the change - even the individual pages look like what I wanted to see - much larger (no need to say "view larger pls" anymore) - and easy navigation to the next and previous. Awesome!!
@primitiveprobe hi, yes, that's intentional. Portrait photos are hard to make look good in a structured layout so I darken the background so they don't look odd.
@bluemoon in the menu at the top .... You -> Your Favs
The link from the profile has been removed in this revision to clean the profile details up a little.
So does that mean that if somebody comments on a picture without opening it, which I guess will happen much more often now, it wont add to the view count?
@happysnap Your favs - click on YOU on the blue bar across the top, 2nd item down is Your Favs. To see someone else's favs, click on their name and go to their profile page, to the right of their profile pic are details of number of photos etc, and you'll see the Favs button there. Hope that helps.
@kiwiflora Thanks a lot Francoise - just realised it had been asked and answered before way up at beginning of the thread so deleted the question. I like to look at other people's favs list from time to time as I am interested in what appeals to them and I also get to see shots that I have otherwise missed. Still haven't found out how to do this yet. Doesn't look possible I don't think.
@markp .... Strange... I get a thick black border round all the pictures and everything shifted to the left, yet my iPhone 5 and both my PC's are fine...... Time for an upgrade I think! ;)
Great, going to make seeing and commenting on photos easier. Although photo view numbers will probably go down as people wont acutally need to click on them to make comments.
@happysnap I just edited my comment above regarding others' favs - " To see someone else's favs, click on their name and go to their profile page, to the right of their profile pic are the details of number of photos etc, and you'll see the Favs button there. Hope that helps."
@Scrivna - any chance the persons @username can go back on their page to make it easier to credit them when sharing their photos in discussion? I spent a while looking for it and in the end had to paste the section out of the address bar...
I am quite liking this new look, I love how much bigger the photos look. I was quite freaked out when I couldn't find the edit option for my photo but I found it lol
It takes a bit of getting used to it. Finding where are the buttons are located now and really like the biggness of the photos. It's a nice change. I like it!
@jdowd i'd like to know this too - i like looking back over my months to glance back quickly and to view the themes i'm doing
Other than that i like it - but would also like to know how the view count will work - as there no longer seems to be any need to view 'properly' @scrivna ?
@steampowered thanks for pointing this out. i was looking for the embed code, for the GROOVY THREAD, and i am sorry to report that I couldn't post the really nice picture!
Glad you answered that @Scrivna ( re the calendar view .) it will take some getting used to but you do see the photos more easily. You are doing a great job as we've the whole concept of the 365. My life has been taken over! Lol
I think the view count should increase just by seeing a picture on the home page now. Otherwise the view count will be unrealistic. You can check if an object appears in the viewport just by using javascript, so it is doable.
@Scrivna Ross, it's a case of the photos being way too big to follow a lot of people. It's going to be especially problematic when you get one person that uploads two weeks worth of photos. I'll be scrolling all day trying to find the next person.
The white space on either side of the page doesn't effectively use the space of a wide monitor. I've got about 6 inches of wasted space, 3 on each side.
For me, the caption is as important as the photo, and that tends to get lost. Having both visible on the screen at the same time was important to me, and now the photo takes up virtually all the space.
Finding the calendar view is not intuitive. When I view someone's project, especially someone that just followed me, I do it in calendar view, only selecting the photos I'm specifically interested in checking further.
The layout itself is simply not visibly appealing. This is true on other pages beyond the home page, but it's most obvious on the home page itself. I want to see as many of the uploads from my friends as possible so I can quickly select what photos I want to view in detail. The new page is structured so I see on average, just one photo per screen scroll. It means most of the folks I follow will never be viewed.
@scrivna - it's all the things I really hate about the upgraded Flickr and I came back here to avoid that and use the community aspects. This new format makes it even more difficult for me to follow people. I get to do that in the evenings after work when I can and maybe in the morning. At least on Flickr I can scroll down and check my feed for the day - and multiple uploads from people are one block that I can ctrl click to look at. I can't here.
Ah well, it's going to make the decision about having enough time to stay on here much, much easier. I am an ace and I have been posting a shot a day. I can see me deleting and going at the end of this month.
The thing I love most about the new look is that now we can see pictures from the person's other albums on their default page. It makes it so much easier to view and click to another picture album.
One thing I don't like is the person posting the photo is only the same size as the people commenting so it's a little harder to see who the photo belongs to.
For me this will make checking my feed easier and quicker. The larger size means I get a good view of each photo and I can decide whether I want to comment or not before moving on. Before I had to click each photo for a look before deciding to comment or not, particularly on my phone. This used to take an age waiting for pages to load etc, tonight has been so much quicker and easier. Leaving time for me to look through photos from folk I don't follow. I think it's great.
@Scrivna I have to say Ross... this update is awesome. It really improves so many aspects of using the site! Navigating through the homepage and commenting/fav'ing is now so simple and efficient! Great job =)
@bella_ss I agree with that Sheralee. Just come on and was a bit shocked! I'm sure I'll get used to it though. I do like seeing the pictures larger but I'm confused about where everything is atm but like I said, I'm sure it won't be long before I get used to it. Thanks Ross @scrivna for all the hard work you put in.
@pandorasecho Dixie, I discovered if you click on "more from this album" above your main album pictures on the right hand side, it brings up the calendar view of that album. Now I'm trying to figure how to bring up the calendar view of my second album and I can't figure that one out.
@wearing0 The only problem with commenting on a photo on your main feed is the picture will not get credit for a view. I always click on the picture and go to their page to comment so they will get credit for the view.
I like that it's bigger for sure.....but the shaded grey area makes the name ABOVE the photo appear to go with that photo, when actually it goes with the photo above. So there might be a mishap in favs.
@scrivna .....this is wicked awesome!! I am loving that you can scroll thru the photos, just click on the photo to view large, click the star to show fav....the only glitch I found was that the arrow still highlights to the right even when there isn't another photo in the project to go to. Way to go!!
The larger format is great! It'll take some practice to get familiar with the navigation changes but, it's wonderful to see the photos clearly and in detail! Looks terrific on my laptop!
I finally found the calendar view....click on the photo number, such as 245/365 and it will give you the calendar.
Or click on the arrows by the album name!
@fueast my sentiments exactly! I have fallen a bit behind with my viewing and commenting and planned to catch up today but Ive given up, its just too hard now
I think the changes are going to be great! I am still reeling from getting used to where everything is. I have post post posted for three years so now I am having to sit back and take notice...where is stuff? Haha ! app on my iphone 5 s looks great. Have not looked at it on IPad 2 yet. Great changes! Yay Ross! @scrivna
@kannafoot@shannejw@scrivna Okay, they do have a point. If you have HUGE ones on the feed, it is tough to see enough of the pics that go up there. Hmmm..... Now I am not sure.
I don't like it. I often use my I-Pad mini to browse around and now I have to squeeze in the page every time I change pages.
I miss the month view as well.
Not only the home page. A big makeover showing bigger (and better) images all over. Take getting used to, but I think much better. View Large seems to have gone? I wonder what the sizes now are for the new "regular" view?
I really like the new look! Very user friendly interface!
Love the new bigger images in the newsfeed and that I can comment from there (I don't really look at view count just read lovely comments and favs...but I may be an odd one out) being time poor (like so many of us are) I can comment on more images :)
I am on my mini iPad now and have not had to pinch it in it moves from one to the other really well.
@espyetta Yes, I prefer the older highlighting of the owner. I suppose Ross will fine tune as people give their opinions.
I really like the addition of latest from other albums.
I am thinking that this is going to reduce the number of photos that anyone gets because if you can see the picture bigger there is no reason to click on it as you had to before to view it larger. It's not just comments that people look for, it's views as well. And this format is going to make that even fewer I think. I have had pictures that even in the old format the got commented on but not fully viewed because I actually had 0 views but 1 comment. I also don't like that you have to click next. I liked that you could just keep scrolling. I have been packing and moving for the past week and I don't know how far back I have to go now to view my friends photos from where I left off. I don't like it, but I will get used to it I suppose.
So - fellow 365ers... Please be polite to the person who's photo you are commenting on and Faving. Click on the picture so it gets the views rather than just commenting on the feed page. That's just my own thoughts.
@Scrivna - not sure whether this is within your power but is there someway to stop logging out of 365 when viewing on an iPhone? I always check 'remember me' but it logs me out every time. I don't think I have the same issue with the iPad.
The new Home page layout really confused me; I thought my browser had had a stroke... (It actually had had a fit of sorts, so no wonder I got confused...)
It's too early for me to give a full 'verdict', but it strikes me that the new Home page layout makes it even more difficult to follow what's happening on other memebers' page than before.
My wish would be to have a column where you could get streamed the uploads of those you follow, and when you click on a posting, it displays in a frame next to the stream column. But that's me.
Also, in Firefox (which is the only browser I've tested so far), all the profile pics are missing; there's only a broken-image-graphic.
uggh don't like it, hard to view on my phone and so is the updated pop page. I no longer look at that page as it takes too long and I think the same will happen with the newsfeed. I feel this site is slowly turning into facebook which is not a good thing
@kjarn@fueast - I've given up trying to catch up too - and I wasn't that far behind last night - it's following that I'm finding impossible @houdiniem - yep too much like Facebook is the complaint about the changes on Flickr too and actually as someone who doesn't do Facebook because we hates it my pre-sss-cious I am less than impressed that the sites I do use all feel they have to copy it @scrivna
@houdiniem Not sure about it turning into Facebook, it reminds me more of Flickr. I'm ambivalent about the new look - it's good to see larger photos but at the same time, as I can see them large size in the feed, I don't have to click on them any more. And I agree with whoever said that views will drop - probably comments too.
I'm not keen on the way the personal page appears (sorry!) with a huge picture at the top and everything else pushed down beneath it. I quite like seeing the person's name, info about them etc first, and being able to look at their favs.
Also while I like the large photos, I wonder if they're a bit too large in the feed. I do appreciate the Next button in that though to get you to the next tranche. Endless scrolling is a pain on older computers that take a little while to load.
@Scrivna I love the big photos!
The only thing I miss is easy access to my friends FAVs - those pages are awesome, I like these personal picks even better than the Popular Page. I found out how I can still see that through one's profile, but it's too many steps...
Latest from all albums is a cool feature, if people have several albums. Browsing it was a bit confusing though, as it skipped photos I could see in the grid view. So I figured that it kept browsing one album the initial photo I clicked on was from...
As people mentioned above - though the author and title of the photo is not as well highlighted as before, it actually might be the same size as before? It just looks so small under the large photo, that deserves all the attention it gets now :)
All in all - great job!
I think it's great and so nice to be able to see decent sized images without having to 'view large' which always cut the bottom off the image on my laptop. I know that you can't please all the people all the time, but the bulk of opinion seems to be in favour of the new layout. For what it's worth, I agree with the others who say that the position of the owner of the shot should be larger and go back to being above the photo in the news feed. Other than that, I think you've done a great job Ross @scrivna
At first I thought, what did I do now. I have a habit of making changes on my desktop without realizing what I did, but then I realized it was an updated view. It will take a little while to get used to it, but overall the larger photos are great.
Overall, I vote YES!! too. Maybe the only thing I'm missing was the black matting on the enlarged view. We used to occasionally post something and say "It look better on black." But...all in all, this really is wonderful. So much was lost in the thumbnail size. THANK YOU!!!
@houser934 you can still see the images against a black background Kathryn. If you hover over the shot a magnifying glass with a + appears, click once and voila :o)
Today I'm noticing that my main feed page it a little hard to get through since the pictures are so big. I wish they could be just a little bit smaller. You do great things with this site, though, Ross.
Hello, I have a question regarding the new layout ... I cant share my Pictures on Facebook anymore :( why is that? I used to have a ton of Buttons which let me share my Picture with Facebook or whatever Service. And now it is all gone?
hi I love this new home page but I am having difficulty with the following. When I go to view someones picture for the day that I may have missed in the home page I cant get it to come up in large-only a thumbnail on the side of the page-the top of the page only has the number of the photo and a date that goes to everyone else's input for the day-can someone please help.
It's a nightmare on android and iPhone. Please don't force me to use the mobile site I want to have the option to use see desktop site on mobile. Every time you comment you have to open the picture using more bandwidth.
Plus iPad you still need to resize in portrait (pinch unzoom) to fit it in.
@thomastoth It sounds like people are commenting on your picture on their main feed page instead of actually going to the picture. I think a picture doesn't get credited for a view if a person doesn't click on your picture and go to your page. I hope this makes sense.
@kannafoot I agree with you about all your points....hard to go through lots of photos if you get a bit behind. Sometimes I have to comment from the home page just to keep up!
Will get used to it though & the pictures are nice & big.
Can't see any dots next the fave button to share on my computer.
Good to keep updating the site though.
@thomastoth . . . this person is right (@mittens) which is what my point was about. The large photos make it so followers don't have to click on your image anymore so you won't get views. And just FYI, the PP and the Trending Page is based on views, comments and faves. It doesn't help if people don't click on your picture to give you the view.
@prttblues Ah yes...the larger photos on the main timeline will eliminate the need to click on the pic. Without a click on the pic, the "views" number will go down. It's going to wack out the PP and Trending page for sure! :)
PP and Trending are relative, not absolute -- you're competing against other members on the site, not against a fixed target. Everyone will be receiving fewer views than before, so overall it will cancel out.
Incidentally, view count is a negative, not a positive, biasing factor. The more views you get for a given number of favs/comments, the less likely you are to make it to PP/Trending. (The basis being that a photo with 10 views and 10 favs is more engaging than a photo with 100 views and 10 favs).
@jools Clicking on the photo number (to the right of the picture title) or the 'More from this album' in the right-hand column should take you to the calendar view.
I haven't read all the comments here so the answer might be there but where are the dates?
I do like it more now I have tried it this morning....creatures of habit that's the trouble!
@roachling@kannafoot@huvesaker@houdiniem
Having initially been unsure of whether I liked it or not, I'm going to leap off the fence and join you guys in saying I'm not keen on this. Sorry! I know a lot of work has gone into it but the news feed just isn't that great any more. The smaller pics were good - you could click if you wanted larger views, now the news feed looks too much like your own page with the huge picture, except that the photo isn't yours.
There are things I like about the redesign, e.g. how the photos are presented on their individual page, but there are quite a few things I miss. I think it's a shame that the photo details, and the tags in particular, are so far down the page now and things like the calendar view are squirrelled away. The photographs themselves look great, but the redesign (as with Flickr's endless redesigns) reinforce to me how much of this site isn't about the photos. It's much more about the community, and recording the passage of time, and not about presenting a portfolio.
And I'm afraid I'm with @fueast about the news feed. I'd prefer something more compact and akin to a summary.
Im not so thrilled with the new layout. Oh believe me we all knew this site needed some MAJOR UPGRADING compared to what the competition has to offer. But not so sure Ross hit the mark on this. But my first impression is dont like.
@michaelelliott I feel a bit bad not hugely liking it, as I can appreciate how much effort has gone into it - and I know I'm not good with change.
My oddest reaction is that I think I'd prefer the news feed to be more like the popular page is now. It's odd because I'd actually prefer the Popular Page itself to revert to the single screen format. ;)
I think I'd like to be able to step through the news feed on the individual photo pages, using the cursor keys, like you now can on a user's album if I want to see them all enlarged.
I don't know - the design requirements are a difficult circle to square.
Modern web page designs seem to like making users scroll a lot. Maybe I'm just getting old. ;)
"One of the most requests features of late has been to show images not just from the current album, but from all your albums. So i've added in a group of thumbnails which shows exactly this. Now your followers can see all the photos you post with ease."
@Scrivna --- My page only shows the default album. I do have an empty album. Could that be causing it not to work?
@mercuria
That's exactly what I don't like about it. I'd rather see more pictures at a time on my feed and choose whether to view properly or not. It doesn't seem a good use of space on the main page any more.
I quite like the display of the photos on the individual photo page -- the larger view is definitely a big step up from the 'postage-stamp' sizes we used to see, that resulted in me, at least, pressing the 'view large' button for every single photo.
It is a bit annoying that the header menu is the constraining factor for the width of the photos (on a desktop device), especially when it's so close to the 1024px width of the native photo. It means that the photos go through a second browser-end resize, and also means that you can still click on the photo to get a ever-so-slightly-larger version. It would have been nice if the site displayed the full 1024px version on devices with a large enough screen, but that's a minor techie niggle.
Below the photo, things feel like they could be organised a bit more optimally. Personally, I would probably like the title and the date to be above the photo, rather than below. I'm also not too keen on the non-standard icons -- the 'gears' icon typically means options/settings, whereas here it means edit, and the share buttons are hidden in the ellipsis, rather than using the typical 'arrow coming out of a box' icon that means share. The RSS feed button feels misplaced too. Some additional icons to indicate public/private, PP and TP features, may also be a nicer and more compact way of displaying that information.
On the right, I agree that a lot of information is a long way down, especially for users with multiple albums. We also have duplication of some data (number of favs and comments). Again, this seems to be partially due to the limitation imposed on the width of the site -- on my fairly-typical widescreen monitor, there's a good 6-7 inches of empty space on each side of the content, and it would be great if the site could be responsive to that extra space, and move the details on the photographer, other albums, and tags etc. so that they sat next to the photo, rather than below it.
On the homepage/news feed, again, the site seems to take up too much vertical space and not enough horizontal space, so there's a lot of scrolling to see new photos. I almost might prefer a Google+ approach of multiple photo columns here (again, responsively designed so it falls back to a single column if the screen size isn't big enough). Some minor things I'm not too keen on are showing the photo number rather than the date, the overall height of the section that shows the name, author, photo number and fav/comment buttons (which also doesn't help with the vertical scrolling issues), and the limited contrast between the author box and the background that makes it easy to attribute the wrong photo to the author.
Overall though, I'm pretty happy with most of, and I can definitely appreciate the effort that's gone into it. I think there are a number of minor tweaks that can be done and that we'll likely see done that will improve some niggles, and the rest we'll get used to in time.
Hmmm. In two minds! Larger photos are nice on the individual photo pages, though it's more scrolling to keep track of new ones on the home page. I really miss easy access to the calendar view, and think having the title above the photo is more natural.. And, I pretty much agree with everything @abirkill says.
@abirkill --- The vertical view is for the hand-held devices and not so much PC's. Most sites are going to this view. I have no idea how this will impact photo editing down the road.
@dmortega 'Responsive' web design is a term used to describe sites that are able to adjust to the device being used dynamically. This allows optional or less-important parts of the page layout to move down, collapse or even disappear if there is insufficient width to display them. When I mentioned things that could be responsive, I was referring to this type of dynamic adjustment to optimise the layout on wider screens while not affecting low-resolution or mobile devices.
This site already does it to some degree (try resizing your desktop browser window to be very narrow on the news feed or photo pages), but there are further optimisations that could be made to prevent the need for such a vertical-oriented layout on wider desktop/laptop screens (or tablets in landscape view).
This is the next iteration to replace so-called 'mobile-only' sites, and all the drawbacks they bring. Most major sites are now attempting, with greater or lesser success, to implement responsive design to allow the same pages to be used on mobile and desktop devices without forcing desktop devices into overly-narrow page layouts. Here's one of many examples:
Google+ has a reasonable implementation of this for photo sharing, where between one and three columns of photos will be shown, depending on the width of your screen.
@abirkill --- Interesting. I think though, the one to two column format is what is happening on many of the sites. Facebook has recently done the same thing, in order to accommodate the smartphones.
@dmortega OK. My impression was that Facebook was retaining a three-column layout for desktop devices (four if you include Messenger), and that their mobile strategy was native apps rather than a website at all, but we may be talking at cross-purposes :)
I have had a few days now to think about the new layout. Mostly I still really like the changes, but my main negative is that on the home page the name of the photographer seems to belong more to the photo below it rather than the one it should be relating to. I even found myself commenting on a photo without opening it up the other day, thinking it had been taken by somebody else entirely.

@soren ... Certainly not awesome... :(

Very cool new format. Thanks
I think we should all be prepared for our daily views to go down though. Less need to click on the photo now that we can see it so large on the home page.
The link from the profile has been removed in this revision to clean the profile details up a little.
Other than that I like the new design.

As people mentioned above - though the author and title of the photo is not as well highlighted as before, it actually might be the same size as before? It just looks so small under the large photo, that deserves all the attention it gets now :)
All in all - great job!
best viewd in desktop //// ...
You have that too?
Plus iPad you still need to resize in portrait (pinch unzoom) to fit it in.
I'm with you guys, I don't like this new look 365 at all. I'll be grumpy with you boo!
Will get used to it though & the pictures are nice & big.
Can't see any dots next the fave button to share on my computer.
Good to keep updating the site though.
@scrivna
Incidentally, view count is a negative, not a positive, biasing factor. The more views you get for a given number of favs/comments, the less likely you are to make it to PP/Trending. (The basis being that a photo with 10 views and 10 favs is more engaging than a photo with 100 views and 10 favs).
I do like it more now I have tried it this morning....creatures of habit that's the trouble!
And I'm afraid I'm with @fueast about the news feed. I'd prefer something more compact and akin to a summary.
Maybe I'm just getting old. ;)
@Scrivna --- My page only shows the default album. I do have an empty album. Could that be causing it not to work?
This site already does it to some degree (try resizing your desktop browser window to be very narrow on the news feed or photo pages), but there are further optimisations that could be made to prevent the need for such a vertical-oriented layout on wider desktop/laptop screens (or tablets in landscape view).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Responsive_web_design
This is the next iteration to replace so-called 'mobile-only' sites, and all the drawbacks they bring. Most major sites are now attempting, with greater or lesser success, to implement responsive design to allow the same pages to be used on mobile and desktop devices without forcing desktop devices into overly-narrow page layouts. Here's one of many examples:
Google+ has a reasonable implementation of this for photo sharing, where between one and three columns of photos will be shown, depending on the width of your screen.
